The actors of the Regional Municipal Theatre Ronov are getting ready for the stage. The young actor Jan is making plain his annoyance. At school, he was considered the most talented student, and now he feels his abilities are too good for a regional theatre. An old actor who is carefully making his face up does not understand Jan's slovenly approach. Jan is also envious of his young colleague who was offered a contract with a Prague theatre. But, to his surprise, the colleague decides to stay in the regional theatre with his wife who acts in the same engagement. The young colleague talks about the countryside viewers in the auditorium who are visibly looking forward to the performance. The standpoint of his colleagues give Jan a big lesson. He makes himself up carefully and leaves with the others for the stage.
