Watchmaker Martin, a shy and introverted young man, is joining the compulsory military service. Just before his departure, he meets a girl, the teacher Eva. Martin joins the paras. This is a catastrophe for the timid boy; he is frightened and refuses to jump from the plane during training. He is unfriendly to the other soldiers and they repay him with all kinds of practical jokes. Martin's father tries to help but his intervention only makes the situation worse. One day, Eva and Martin's father come to visit. Martin is rushing to meet them and because the soldiers sewed up his sleeves for a joke, he borrows somebody else's coat. However, it has a jump badge on it. Eva is delighted by his courage but a corporal shows up and removes the badge. Eva leaves right away because she doesn't like cowards. The soldiers in the troop also criticize Martin for his cowardice and lack of friendship. Martin finally admits that they are right, gathers courage and jumps. When he goes back home for the holiday, he has a badge and all that's left to do is make up with Eva.
