A war invalid, an ex-German soldier, disapprovingly observes his young son who is getting ready for a meeting of Hitler Youth. He knows how cruel the war is, and doesn't want his son to support the monstrous ideas of Nazism. As the boy still wants to go, there is a quarrel and the man tears his son's uniform. Two soldiers come knocking at the door very soon afterwards. Afraid that his son reported on him, the man sends his wife to the door. But the soldiers only came to borrow an umbrella because it's raining outside. The father bitterly acknowledges that he has to buy his son a new uniform and allow his membership in the Hitler Youth organization, because he has no other choice or he will bring his entire family into danger.
