Synopsis

Young worker Helena Pokorná and her widowed father work in the same factory. The father is spending his holiday at home in Prague, already eager to go back to work. Helena is going to be rewarded with a holiday at the seaside. On a hot day in July, the girl is taking a jammed tram to work. The crowd pushes her out at the riverside and Helena doesn't manage to get on any of the coming trams. The girl is tempted by the water and makes a call to the factory saying she's ill. She takes a steam-boat to Modřany. There she meets a young man who wants to get some sleep by the river after a night shift. Helena is drawn into strange games by a group of idlers and riverside girls. One of the hooligans hides her clothes. The young man, who keeps following her after he wakes up, helps Helena. The father takes a meal to Helena at work and discovers that everybody believes her to be ill. He takes her place at the machine and can't wait to settle this with his rascal daughter. In the meantime, the girl is taking a walk around Prague with her new acquaintance, afraid to go back home. She runs away from the boy but he reaches their flat before she does. He is pleased to hear from Mr Pokorný that Helena is a decent girl. Helena is ashamed of what she did and tears up her holiday voucher.
