It is the end of the Second World War. The Nazi General surrenders. He is condemned and is serving his sentence in prison. When he is released, the circumstances in the German Federal Republic seem to be favourable toward the Nazis. The General's old army servant had been looking after his villa and has become a lover and protector of the General's daughter. The General's old fellow-fighters, who still meet in secret and are bringing up the young on their speeches and drinking bouts, take an interest in him. But the General is already old and doting. He doesn't notice the reality around him and is busy winning his imaginary battles on the battle-field models. The General's daughter gets rid of the now no longer necessary lover. The General dies, but many like him still remain.
