Mechov is a village like any other. The cooperative is prospering and the people are, more or less, working, quarrelling and falling in love. One day young Francek Sehnal, who never saw work as his favourite hobby, overhears a conversation from which he understands that a big recreation centre is going to be built by the Mechov pond. Right away Francek decides to use this for his own profit. He is joined by the jack-of-all-trades Veverka, as well as pub-owner Dvořáček, who starts building an illegal plum brandy distillery together with Vincek Strouhal. They are preparing some other attractions for the future holiday makers and weekend cottage owners as well. Their work in the cooperative suffers because of this private business. One day an official car, a Tatra 603, shows up in Mechov. The "entrepreneurs" are in panic, thinking that this could be the local district inspection. They start wiping out the proof of their secret activity and while doing this damage their property. Then they finally realize that the "inspection" was in fact the forester Malina, who is going to work on establishing a nature reserve right by the Mechov pond. This ends their dreams of getting rich quickly.
