Synopsis

Summer guests are spending the last days of their holidays in a small village near a lake in South Bohemia. Ageing but elegant Věra Mixová is here, with her niece Zuzka and an old small-town couple Vachs. At the lido, by the camp-fire and in the hotel, they meet with the local people. They meet the older postmaster, firmly convinced that one should work unselfishly to help the others. He is sadly and hopelessly in love with Věra. They also meet a group of young people, led by a somewhat frivolous glass smelter Jirka. Věra is firm with her niece for she's jealous of her youth. She flirts with Jirka but isn't happy with her life. She is expecting that her lover - editor and an ex-poet Morák - will solve her problems. But the weak man lost all his ideals a long time ago and he doesn't really love Věra any more. He comes after Věra to her summer flat to tell her that he is going to marry his landlady who is expecting his child. Disillusioned Věra throws herself into the lake. Jirka jumps after her convinced that she is Zuzka. He discovers he was wrong, but nevertheless helps Mixová onto the shore. He then hurries after Zuzka to tell her that he loves her.
