In a wooden hut used as a canvassing centre, members of a pioneer puppet-theatre group are rehearsing for a production about a journey to the Moon. The goings-on inside the hut and outside are being closely followed by amateur detective Pepík Barnabáš. He, however, is the first to be under suspicion when a trunk containing puppets goes missing. The children follow him but, when they catch up with him, they discover he hasn't got it. Pepík offers to help them in their search. The children accept his help and so the little detective gradually embarks upon the trail of two boys from their school, then to the hospital, to old Mrs Březinová, to a refuse incinerator and then to the gallery. To Pepík's great dismay suspicion also falls on his great friend - the apprentice Jirka - since he had sold one of the lost puppets to another friend. It turns out that Jirka had found the puppet trunk on the rubbish dump and, thinking that someone had thrown it out, he had taken it. Everything ends happily and Pepík and Jirka become new members of the theatre group.
