A cat belonging to Mr and Mrs K describes the strange behaviour of its master and mistress with the help of a fable about a mouse who is heading irrevocably towards a trap. Mr K, a valuer of deceased persons' property, has taken some jewellery and hidden it in his flat. His fear prevents him from selling his cache, however. Just when he is adorning his wife with some of the jewels, Mr B, a curious neighbour, pays them a visit. In their haste to hide everything away, they do not notice that a bracelet has fallen under the table. Mr B asks Mr K whether they have any jewellery at home. Mr K denies all knowledge of any. Mr B, however, has noticed the bracelet and he leaves with a telling smile on his face.
