Varney is convicted of the murder of his lover's jealous husband. The wife doesn't help him at the trial; she even accuses him of raping her. Varney is sentenced to twenty years in prison. He is desperate and even his fellow inmate cannot comfort him with the thought it's the poor that have no choice while the rich find their way out of everything. Varney looks for a tool to dig his way out to freedom but a toothbrush is the only thing he finds. The other inmate is set free and Varney rakes furiously with a broken toothbrush.
