An ambulance has just brought a newborn baby girl to a big maternity ward. In the Vsetín hospital where the baby has been born they don't have the necessary equipment for her serious health problem. The child's mother is an Rh-negative blood type and the child is Rh-positive after her father. This has caused the antibodies in the mother's body to attack the "intruder". Only an exchange transfusion can save the baby's life, exchanging the baby's blood for new blood that matches the mother's. In this way, its bad blood would gradually be diluted and removed. But the hospital's blood bank can only provide half the amount needed. All attempts to phone the volunteer blood donors prove unsuccessful. It is the very last day of the year and people are out celebrating New Year's Eve. They manage to reach some of the donors but unfortunately they have all drunken alcohol. Then nurse Jana learns about the problem, and since she has the matching blood group she immediately offers to give her blood for the transfusion. She refuses to take the money; she is comforted to know that she has helped save a baby's life.
