The school inspector compliments a teacher for the good work of her third-grade pupils but criticizes her for the first-graders' poor results. The number of children in the small village is small so they all attend the same class. It so happens that she has several third-graders in the class and only one first-grade pupil - Martin Škoda. He is extremely absent-minded and answers his teacher's questions and rebukes with curious questions about things that have nothing to do with the schoolwork. In the afternoon, the teacher visits the small cottage where Martin lives. Engrossed in playing school with the kitchen utensils, the boy fails to notice her arrival. When he answers the questions instead of his "pupils", his knowledge of the schoolwork is almost impeccable. The teacher realizes what may have caused the boy's poor results and back at school she tries to test his knowledge in the presence of other "first-graders", which are in fact various inanimate objects.
