Widow Večeřová and her neighbour in the little house next to her, Veselá, try to out-do each other with tales of the success, both real and made-up, of their adult children, who often come to visit them. Vláďa Večeřa, physician, is forced by his mother's emotional blackmail to borrow a car every weekend from his neighbour Kadlec and bring over many things, mostly coming from a hire company. Jituška Veselá, for a change, has a groom with a Volha car. Vláďa's wife Vlasta, and postman Veselý find the whole situation immensely detestable, but the two women will not stop. Their weird game ends only on the weekend when Kadlec comes to pick up his car and uncompromisingly leaves in it. Moreover, although Jituška's groom has a Volha, he is just an elderly and not too handsome man and has chosen his fiancée mainly as a mother for his four sons unprovided for.
