The marriage of Jaroslav and Marie, parents of two schoolchildren, seems calm and orderly. Marie, a housewife, can however sense that her husband has become estranged from her and all the warmth and love have faded out of their relationship. Marie suspects that there is an affair with another woman behind her husband's evening business meetings but does not want to know the truth, hoping that time will heal everything. When their children, Hanka and Jirka, receive their own keys to the apartment, the family's Sunday trips and cinema visits are instantly over. Marie is not sure whether to envy her childless and single friend Věra her independent life. Věra's brother Jenda is fond of Marie and wants to develop a closer relationship with her. Marie accepts his wooing only when Jaroslav brings the situation to a head and moves away from home. The children miss their father and Marie keeps apologizing for his absence claiming they are business trips. Once Jaroslav comes home to pick up his clothes, but is even unable to find time for his son. Marie decides to get divorced, and although Jenda takes her with her children for trips, she is taken by surprise when he offers to marry her. She, however refuses the offer, since she has decided to get a job and stand on her own feet first. As a symbol of her new life, she also gets a different, less uptight haircut.
