After graduating, Eduard, a young teacher, takes up a post at a school in a small town. The shy youth soon meets a charming girl, Alice. She is also fond of Eduard and the couple experiences beautiful moments together. The only problem in their relationship is Alice's strong religious feeling, which somewhat restricts their love. What is more, Eduard has to go to church with Alice. There are no secrets in a small town and Eduard is soon invited to report to the headmistress and other school officials, because it is unacceptable for a teacher in a Communist state to believe in God. Eduard admits that he is not entirely sure whether God exists or not. His sincerity catches the headmistress off guard. She decides to take Eduard's education in atheism in hand herself. She invites him to visit her and seduces him. Eduard experiences a sense of guilt, he ponders on the questions of Truth and finally comes to the conclusion that lies are necessary.
