Summary

Screenwriter Ota Hofman adapted his own novel to create this 1971 children’s film, directed by Radim Cvrček and Zdeněk Rozkopal (the latter being an architect and set designer by profession). The modern fairytale takes place just before Christmas and features a Prior department store in Bratislava in one of its “leading roles”. The main protagonists of the film are preschool friends Tomáš and Zuzana who inadvertently cause the postponement of Christmas at a fairground shooting gallery. After being distracted by the girl, the boy shoots the eponymous blue elephant, which is also the harbinger of the holiday of peace and goodwill, in the eye instead of the trunk. In order to put things right the children must obtain a new eye in the department store where they experience a range of adventures… Starring in the adult roles are Josef Hlinomaz (shooting gallery owner), Miloslav Šulc (grandpa Bertoldi) and Karel Štědrý (storekeeper Halala).

Synopsis

Two days before Christmas. Zuzanka and Tomáš, friends from a kindergarten wander off during a walk. They admire toys and decoration in shop-windows. Zuzanka shall receive a sledge as a Christmas present and Tomáš even a desired little brother. At a shooting gallery Tomáš aims at a target on the trunk of a blue elephant which can call in Christmas. The impatient Zuzanka pushes to her friend and he shoots directly to the elephant's red eye. Things which the owner of the shooting gallery warned about happened: the sun popped on the sky, the snow melted and all Christmas shopping has stopped. Both pushful children decide to get a new eye for the elephant so that everything can be set right. In a department store they take a paternoster up to the warehouse of toys to the fairytale star. The warehouseman Halala tries to help them in vain. In the meantime they are chased by Tomáš's grandpa, the magician Bertoldi, who was supposed to baby-sit the grandchild before his mother comes back from hospital. Tomáš and Zuzanka experience still a lot of adventure - they meet for instance their future siblings before they are advised by blue elephants on the Christmas island that Zuzanka's red button on her shirt is exactly what they are looking for. The grandpa takes both refugees to the shooting gallery and the elephant gets his eye back. The grandpa hits the target exactly and this starts the Christmas just on time.
