The farmer's old mother is ailing and it looks as if nothing more can be done for her. But the crops in the field will not wait and so the farmer hires Stáza, a woman from the village who has already looked after many dying people. The thrifty farmer would rather not spend money needlessly, and since it seems that his mother will only last another few days, he makes an agreement with Stáza on a single payment of twelve crowns. As soon as the farmer leaves to tend his fields, Stáza begins to tell the helpless bedridden old woman about all her previous clients and the ways in which they died. She invites the priest to give the patient the last rites. After his departure, she asks the woman if she has ever seen the devil. The sick woman is scared out of her wits when right away a "devil" bursts into the room with a broom in his hand and a saucepan on his head. The shock of fright gives way to hysterical laughter when she recognises the apparition as Stáza. However, the excitement has been too much for the old woman and her heart has stopped. Stáza, who hasn't had to stay long at the farmer's house, contentedly collects her payment.
