Sixteen years old Al finished his school attendance. His ever fighting parents force him to find a job. Al admires his father. Although his father is often unemployed but he takes part in trade unions actions actively. He tells Al about things which he learnt from books and newspapers. He tells him about the Russian revolution that everybody was dragged to the wall and who had white collar hands was taken up or shot in these times. Al finds an apprentice job in a workshop where Bernard works too as an apprentice. Bernard is promoted and works at the machines and Al sweeps the floor mainly. Bernard is not especially clever, but Al considers him to be his friend. They both have a dream - Al would like to have a moped and Bernard would like to have a gramophone. One day Bernard offers to Al that he can buy his moped which he never mentioned before. Al bargains for a while about the price but in the end he accepts the conditions and then he sets out gladly for his first ride. But he loses his moped immediately. The real owner of the moped recognizes it on the street. Moreover, he beats him up. Al reveals to his father that he did not give Bernard in, and he better said he had borrowed the abandoned moped for a ride. But Al does not get his money back from the thief as Bernard was taken in for another crime.
