Synopsis

One April day in 1889 a woman in labour sends her servant to fetch the doctor. The kind doctor Goldmund helps calm the woman down and she soon gives birth to a healthy boy. The events in the room are juxtaposed with the documentary shots from the Second World War: explosions, Adolf Hitler's speech, bodies of the dead inside concentration camps, flags with swastikas. The mother of the newborn boy is happy, since her two previous pregnancies had ended tragically. At the time she wanted to name her firstborn Alois, but now superstitiously chooses another name - Adolf. The Jewish doctor assures the new mother that her boy will prosper and kindly takes his leave of Mrs Hitler.

Note

The calendar used on the set shows the date the 28th of April, but Adolf Hitler was born on the 20th of April.
