Radka, a fifteen years old girl, joins a long haired young man in a car on Wenceslas Square in Prague. They become good friends. Richard claims to be a student of medicine, but in reality he makes his idle living by secret sales of his father's precious books. Radka lives with her divorced father, who, after his wife left him, limited his life to working and watching TV over a glass of beer. Richard wants to get a new source of income, making Radka visit a lonely retired doctor Háša, a neighbour in her house. The old man tells Radka interesting stories; he used to meet her parents in their weekend house in Čimelice. He has an extensive library and lends Radka whatever book she likes. On Richard's demand, Radka makes a list of Háša's books. Most of them are very rare ones and the young man is very interested in them. Radka then secretly takes one of the books from Háša and Richards sells it for a very good price. Radka later participates in a boring snobbish party at Richard´s friends. Disgusted, she borrows the money gained from the sale of the book and buys it back from the antiquarian bookshop. On coming home to return the book to Háša, she hears unusual noise in the house. The shocked Radka learns of doctor Háša's sudden death - he probably died of his third heart attack.
