A young man squeezes his way in taiga through a deep snow to the solitary house. The old Nikitič, the only inhabitant of the house is not surprised by the visitor. He thinks the young man is a geologist so he treats him. He just wonders that the guest set out to the taiga without any gun, the nearest village is more than 150 km far away. The young man admits he is an escaped prisoner, and he tries to get away at night with the old man's things - a gun and tobacco. The generous old man stops him thanks to a second gun, but he does not even turn him in to the militia commander, who drops by. The young man leaves the following day with the borrowed gun which he is supposed to leave for Nikitič in the village where the closest train station is. The young man wants to be sure. After the old man shows him out he shoots him by one shot to his back.
