Summary

A duo of seemingly incompatible characters – a 50-year-old manager and a 20-year-old student – meet in this slowly moving psychological narrative picture from experienced director Jaroslav Balík. A trade fair in Brno forms the backdrop for this dramatic story of an ageing protagonist looking back on his life. Shot according to a screenplay treatment from Vladimír Kalina, the film relates how Jiří Klíma has to go on a business trip to New York. But he is having issues with his wife and unexpectedly pregnant daughter. Student Kateřina persistently reminds him of an old flame of his, but she has enough sense to put an end to their short relationship. However, the encounter influences Jiří to rethink his attitudes to life, while he also goes on to thwart a disadvantageous deal with a German company in favour of Czech manufacturers… Stanisław Zaczyk and Eva Sitteová perform the leading roles in this 1977 feature.

Synopsis

A recognized foreign trade expert Jiří Klíma, head of the foreign trade department, is offered a job in New York. A fifty years old smart man has not yet felt how quickly the time passes, but new circumstances make him think about his life. His nineteen years old daughter is pregnant. Jiří planned a great future for his only child, now he is seriously disappointed at her decision to get married with driver Zdeněk and drop her studies. He is also surprised at the fact that his pretty wife Dana, a lawyer, does not want to leave with him for the USA. She likes her job and is afraid of loneliness, which she has been experiencing even in Prague, because her husband is extremely busy. Jiří leaves for the Brno Trade Fair where he meets Kateřina, who reminds him of his student love Lucy. Thinking about his past as well as the future, Jiří notices the actions taken by his ambitious colleague Rott who sees himself in Klíma's place, trying to enter into business with a large West German company. Jiří immediately starts to contact Czech manufacturers and negotiate the deliveries of goods that are free from financially inconvenient deliveries from the West. Kateřina finished a few-day affair, asserting that Jiří only saw his long-lost love Lucy in her. Klíma finally decides to stay in Prague, accepting his daughter's decision and hoping that their marital crisis will soon be over.
