The second half of the 1970s brought dramatic changes for Ondřej Havelka: he began to sing in the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra, he left Ypsilon Studio and he began to study opera directing at JAMU in Brno. The year of 1977, meanwhile, saw Havelka make his silver screen debut. He took the leading role of an idealistic young man, Karel, who accepts a job as a tractor driver in a small village. But he fails to find the good and just people he longs to encounter, even among the down-to-earth residents of this idyllic settlement… This comedy, which unfolds during the harvesting season, is director Július Matula’s second feature. Markéta Fišerová stars as the hero’s country girl love interest, co-operative bookkeeper Hanka. Svatopluk Skopal plays her existing boyfriend, rogue tractor driver Venca.
The young man Karel is very sensitive and he takes any injustice and any bad conduct very hard. But he cannot face up negative situations. Always he better leaves his job and finds another one in hope it will be better somewhere else. One day he finds himself in a small village just before the harvest-time. Karel gets a job here as a tractor driver and soon he meets all citizens. He likes the accountant Hanka, a girlfriend of the tractor driver Venca. Both young men are rivals at work, but soon the rivalry grows into hostility. Hanka starts to prefer the kind Karel instead of the ill-mannered Venca. After some time Karel decides to marry Hanka and to settle in the village. But the jealous Venca does not want to give the girl up. First he damages a motor in Karel's tractor. Later, when he is drunk he attacks Karel on a harvest feast and he beats him up in front of everybody. The humiliated Karel wants to leave the village with Hanka. He wants to find a place where people are good and just. She turns his offer down. She knows that people are everywhere the same and that everybody has to fight for his place in society himself. Karel leaves, but perhaps the next summer will be different and he might come back.
