Bětka came to Prague from South Moravia to study stomatology. At the train station she met Vavřinec, who wants to study the same. Bětka's uncle, receptionist Dopita offered to put in a good word for her, but she had refused. Unlike Vavřinec, she was not accepted to study. Now doctor Vokřál, a stomatologist and university teacher, an acquaintance of Bětka's uncle, comes handy. An old bachelor takes care of the young girl, sending her textbooks via Vavřinec. The young man is looking for her several times with no success. Bětka is pushing her way through, being assisted by a taxi-driver and a pimp Valentin. Vavřinec finally finds Bětka, visiting her at women boarding house. Due to his unannounced visit, she is fired from the hostel. Bětka stays overnight at Vavřinec's apartment and decides to take the life in her hands. She attracts professor Vokřál, moves into his flat and while the old bachelor in love washes up, she is revising for the entrance exams to stomatology.
