After his graduation from a secondary school, Mirek Šilhavý starts working at a train station. He is disappointed with his work among the shunters and feels far above them - he has secondary education! He looks down on his colleagues and his main enemy is the oldest member of the team, nicknamed Vindobón. Without any feeling of responsibility he has a one-night love affair with an older ticket office worker Růža, who has had a long-term relationship with the railwayman Franta.Vindobón is also interested in Růža and even proposes to her. During one night, after their duties, the whole team takes a track inspection railcar and goes to their favourite pub. Here, Mirek refuses to have a beer with his workmates and tells them how low opinion he has of them. During the return journey, the trolley breaks down. A catastrophe is about to happen, as the fast train called Vindobona, is to pass on the same track in only twenty minutes. The men are trying to repair the trolley and Mirek runs away. Everybody sees it as cowardice, but Mirek runs to the closest station to make the station master stop the train. He gets there too late, but manages to get the train on a different track. After the dangerous event, everybody goes to the pub. Vindobón sits down to drink beer with Mirek. Mirek sees Růža with Franta and destroys the letter in which she accepts Vindobón's proposal.
