A mother is cleaning her poor and shabby home, getting ready to welcome a visitor. Her son Slávek is playing. The expected visitor is Vladimir Nikolajevich who talks about himself and his wife. He used to drink a lot before he quit, but it was hard work. His wife ran away from him anyway. Vladimir offers a drink to the woman and then they play chess. The man turns to Slávek from time to time, saying “Try hard, Slávek”. Leaving, he only gently touches the woman’s fingers. The woman is left alone puzzled, asking herself: Why is he visiting me at all? Does he feel sad? Why on Earth does he come?
