The boy Honza admires a tattoo he sees on the chest of the former sailor Korecký. Korecký tells him that these are done by his friend Lojza in exchange for two shots of rum. Although Honza is a sincere believer, he dares to borrow some change from a church moneybox and solemnly swears to St Anthony to return the money. Lojza promises to create him a tattoo of a sailing boat in exchange for a rum, but he instead decorates the chest of the small naive boy with a half-nude mermaid just to amuse his pub cronies. The dean is not angry with Honza but bans him from further serving as an altar boy. The weeping boy runs away to the river where he is later found asleep by the ashamed Korecký.
