Director Milan Muchna adds to the popular 1970s and 80s teenage comedy sub-genre with this 1981 tale of an apprentice bricklayer who is having problems in his love life. Matěj Hůrka is an ordinary young provincial man, who falls in love with the distant Barča. Learning the dos and don’ts of romance only lands poor Matěj in more trouble. The story carries distant echoes of the more famous Ostře sledované vlaky (Closely Watched Trains, 1966), as well as the Czech films of director Miloš Forman. Ivan Weisner, the actor of choice for director Muchna, takes the lead role in this film. Weisner appeared previously in Muchna’s teenage comedy Hon na kočku (Chasing the Cat, 1979) and had a smaller role in his military comedy Zelená léta (The Green Years, 1985). Muchna’s nod to the Czechoslovak New Wave era is underscored by his choice of Milada Ježková in the role of Matěj’s grandmother (the actress appeared in both Closely Watched Trains and Lásky jedné plavovlásky ( Loves of a Blonde, 1965).
An eighteen-year-old bricklayer's apprentice, Matěj Hůrka, falls in love with the young Barbora Cupalová at a village fair, but the girl is pinched from him by the ace Even. Matěj has been living with his grandmother since his mother died and his father remarried. Grandmother Hůrková is about to marry the pensioner Vokurka and does not know how to tell her grandson. Matěj loves nature; he is kind-hearted and is always ready to help in the local cooperative. One day, by chance, he stops by a pond and ends up watching some girls bathing naked. He is recognized and subjected to mockery in the village. A bricklayer's foreman notices Matěj's troubled relationships with women and recommends he court the frivolous signalwoman, Vlasta. But Matěj does not manage to get any love experience with her either. Only Vokurka's granddaughter Tereza makes the boy go with her to a barn outside the village. But Matěj loses his courage when face to face in the unambiguous situation. Barbora realizes Matěj's qualities after her unpleasant experience with Even and gives preference to Matěj at the fireman's ball. The two later end up in the barn, but it starts to burn suddenly. The firemen are, however, insufficiently prepared and the barn burns to the ground. Only Matěj, the young member of the fire brigade, excels when he rescues a cow from from the fire. It is the end of summer. The lovers Matěj and Barbora bathe in the pond, naked. The couple then walks off into a thick forest.
