The employees of an unnamed company, sharing one office, are taken by surprise by the death of their superior, a lonesome bachelor. His deputy dictates information for the death notice. The very young typist used to have professional disputes with the boss, but now it seems that she is the most touched by his death. The accountant Hurych gets frightened because he had lent money from the official cashbox to the deceased man. Such short-term allowances were probably commonplace in the office, but now, it is just the accountant who will probably be in trouble. The deputy claims that half of the debt might be covered from the additional charge of the dead man’s wage – although the rest would possibly be up to the accountant. Addresses must be written on the envelopes with the death notices. But the working time is over and everybody is leaving. Only the typist Jana agrees to stay after hours.
