Nurse Božena Tomešová gets a wire that her husband was killed while fulfilling his service duty on the Czechoslovakian border. In reality, Božena had broken from him a long time ago. She lives with her friend Vojta and wanted to get divorced from her husband. His death changed her circumstances. The young woman is now the widow of a hero and unsuccessfully explains to the respective authorities that she no longer had anything in common with him. Despite that, she must attend his funeral, but she adamantly refuses a widow’s pension. Her late husband is to receive distinction in memoriam and, therefore, the authorities screen her life. The case is tried by the local communist party unit in the hospital where she works.
