Young actress Zdena arrives in Prague to meet her boyfriend, photographer Petr. She was promised an engagement in the National Theatre and a role in Chekhov’s Cherry Orchard. Her place was, however, taken by the ungifted Věra. Zdena is deeply disillusioned but she does not want to give up her desire to get a great career. At a party, she is introduced to director Procházka who is just working on the classical tragedy Antigona. Zdena overcomes her shyness and sets off to meet the director in his flat. Procházka invites her to a rehearsal and he indeed selects her for the main role. She however, finds out that she is pregnant. Petr looks forward to having a baby but Zdena is unhappy because she will have to give up the promised role. Zdena hesitates between maternity and acting career, and eventually gets an abortion without Petr’s awareness. This, nevertheless, is the end of their relationship.
