Small Lilika lives with her mother, her step-father and step-brother – still a baby – in the gallery dwelling in Beograd. Her only friend is the shy Peca, who often overnights on the stairs. The neighbours speak of him as an imbecile. Lilika’s father is a primitive bully, who swears at her and even beats her. Her mother is not much better and, when her step-father enforces in quarrels that Lilika go to a children’s home, she invites a social worker. But the little girl wants to stay at home and therefore she describes her parents as liberal and loving. When a letter comes with a negative judgement by the authorities, her mother assaults the little girl with such hatred that Lilika decides it’s better to leave for the children’s home. Before that, she buries in the cellar two simple flabby dolls, the only things that were providing her emotional background.
