In the village school, three years after the war children are listening to the catechist’s story telling about Babylon’s tower. Among the children is also Vašík. His father is a chairman of the proletarian union of atheists, who calls his believing wife an unprincipled opportunist. He forbids the religion classes to his son. The catechist complains to the headmaster that young people prefer dancing, tramping, sport, and the interest in church is falling off. In the competition for a church solo singer wins Vašík, but his father allows him only to sing at funerals for a fee. The boy will get fifty crowns for his performance and he wishes that a plague sets in so that he could buy his longed-for horse. The communist president Gottwald’s speech signalises new times and the catechist is arrested by police. Vašík is singing with other pioneers a song glorifying socialist building up and he is happy – their pioneer organisation has a horse.
