It is the early 20th century in Russia and a group of young people – who planned to assassinate the hated minister of the tsarist government but were discovered – is sentenced to death. The girls Tanya and Musya and the young men Sergey, Vasiliy and Verner wait in their jail cells, each of them coping differently with their inevitably approaching death. There are also two other prisoners awaiting execution: the hysterically moaning criminal Mikhail Golubets and the stoical and illiterate labourer Ivan. Sergey, the son of a retired colonel Nikolay Golovin, cannot miss his exercising even in such a situation. When the desperate parents visit him to say goodbye, everyone tries to control their emotions but they do not really succeed. The collapsed Vasiliy is visited by his mother. The lonely and poor woman turned into an old granny overnight following the news about her son’s sentence. No one comes to see the girls but they are both equable and brave. The seven sentenced people are taken to a secluded place by soldiers. The prisoners gradually leave to the gallows in couples. They all, including the two murderers, support and calm each other and say goodbye.
