A young woman, seated in the middle of a room, is reading. A young man, named Pavel, comes in. The two are in fact actors rehearsing a scene of a disagreement between two lovers, Valère and Mariane, from Molière’s comedy Tartuffe. The woman is angry that Pavel came an hour late, complaining that he probably does not care about their work. Valère reproaches Mariane that her father favours the hypocrite Tartuffe. He wants him to marry his daughter although Mariane is not interested in Tartuffe. The relationship between the two actors begins to pervade the rehearsal. Pavel claims that the young actress slept with the director, she blames him for an incorrect approach to the part and for arbitrarily “adapting” Molière’s dialogues. They, however, eventually manage to perform the scene well. Valère tells Mariane that he is leaving and will never come back. But Pavel leaves, too, and the young actress vainly searches for him in the film studios among the backdrops.
