A severely wounded girl is taken to a window in a hospital corridor by an assistant. A glass bead reminds her of her past. On a summer’s day, she attracted the attention of a red-haired boy who was hopelessly trying to fly a kite in windless weather. The girl balanced on a rail leading through the landscape and bushes. She told the boy that she lived alone in a decayed railway house. Her mother ran away with a brakeman and her father started drinking. Her sister, who she admired for her talent to throw widely popular parties, had a bad reputation. The rumours went that she slept with every railman who visited their house. But now, she is dead. The girl also recollected the sister’s burial where her coffin was carried by totally drunken men in railway uniforms. She herself had many dreams and plans, although she was broke and lived on what she found in the garbage. She conditioned fulfilling her dreams by walking a certain distance on the rail. Buried in her dreams, she failed to hear the approaching train and the departing boy did not manage to warn her. Now, the girl is in a wheelchair, she has no legs and is apparently dying.
