From 29th July to 6th August 1962, the 8th World Festival of Youth and Students was held in Helsinki. Evald Schorm, Sheila Ochová and Miloš Bergl were sent from FAMU, a film school in Prague. They did not have a cameraman with them, so they made a documentary about the festival for the magazine International Review, Helsinki 62, from materials provided by the Polish Film Chronicle and they used some footage by Jiří Volbracht from Czechoslovak Television. Several festival events appear in the film, such as the opening and closing parades, seminars, athletic competitions, dance performances, as well as the beauty queen contest and visit of Yuri Gagarin. In addition to these events, the cameras also captured the ordinary days and the nightlife of Helsinki's busy streets.
Delegates arrive by various means of transport to the 8th World Festival of Youth and Students in Helsinki. Those travelling by bus can experience some of the Finnish landscape and sights along the way. The streets of Helsinki are already busy even before the festival starts. At the end of July 1962, the festival parade bursts into the streets. In the following days, there are festival seminars, athletic competitions, the beauty queen contest, and cultural performances of each delegation. Besides that, the delegates get to know the city and the local people. Fish and vegetable markets start in the morning, bars, and the amusement park at night. The festival is "battling" with the Young America Presents event and riots in the streets at night. On Saturday 4th August 1962, the cheering crowds in Helsinki welcome Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin and the final festival parade ends with fireworks.
The film uses material from the Polish Newsreel.
