Bizet's opera Carmen served Studio Y in Liberec to freely experiment with characters, narrative, words, melodies, and sounds. Not even Evald Schorm's documentary Carmen is just a traditional recording of a theatre production, but rather a film adaptation of sorts and an original portrait of a young theatre company.
A performance by Studio Y in Liberec – an unconventional analysis of Georges Bizet's opera Carmen. Actors in improvised costumes perform some parts of the opera, interspersed with recitation of stage notes, historical interpretation, and witty comments on the plot. Scenes alternate between backdrops and snowy landscapes.
The original play by Studio Ypsilon and Jan Schmid premiered on 8 February 1966 at the North Bohemian Puppet Theatre in Liberec. The film was released as an opener to the comedy Our Crazy Family (1968; directed by Jan Valášek).
