Evald Schorm's mosaic Quails from the lives of textile factory apprentices shows the conflict between the spontaneity and dreams of young people and the system that placed them in the grey environment of factories in the borderline area. The immediate behaviour of the girls in front of the camera, both at work and in their free time, is organically linked with the dialogue performed by Iva Janžurová and Hana Smrčková about everyday experiences and aspirations for the future. For political reasons, the director's name was not mentioned in the credits.
We share a view of the misty city of Náchod with a group of young female apprentices from a textile factory. They look down from the hill on which the Náchod castle stands. The girls have been led here by their tutor, who gives them constant lectures. The expedition walks through the interior of the castle. The view of the historical battle image transitions seamlessly to a slashing machine for spinning threads. It's the start of a normal day at the factory. The monotonous work at the machine is interrupted by a break and the payment of wages. After work, the girls are clearly bored. The boarding school and the border town do not offer them many ways to spend their free time. On a trip to the city, a couple of apprentices try their luck at a stall selling state lottery tickets. In the evening, the girls have fun together again – they pretend to perform a strip tease they have recently heard about.
The film was released as an opener to the comedy Přehlídce velím já! (1969; directed by Jaroslav Mach).
