The admiring, almost propagandistic tone of Václav Táborský's film Hours Behind the Wheel about truck drivers is balanced by amusing pieces of their banal conversations and everyday rituals on short journeys with loads of sand. The daily routine of the sand workers at the Veltrusy sand plant turns in front of the camera into an interesting short film about man and his work.
A group of Tatra 111 truck drivers spends their normal working day at a sand plant near Veltrusy. They take the mined sand to the quay and return back, eighteen times each. Between and during their journeys, they find time for a snack, a cigarette, and a casual chat.
