Václav Táborský's film Our Grandfather's Tips and Tricks deals with the relativity of time. It is a reflection of the past social or ethical values that have disappeared in just a few decades. The story is made up of contemporary newspaper illustrations (Ilustrovaný kurýr, Nové ilustrované listy, Humoristické listy, folk calendars, etc.) and filmed scenes, accompanied by playful puns, moral slogans, and songs. The framework of the film are stories about a constantly drunk grandfather who educates his grandchildren with pieces of advice.
A grandson talks about his grandfather's arrival to the family, about holidays spent at his grandfather's house, and about his last trip with his grandfather. The grandfather's spoken and sometimes sung advice and the grandson's commentary take turn. The grandfather's bizarre lessons refer to various areas of human activity, whether it is agriculture, political associations, youth education, or alcoholism and gambling. The absurdity of grandfather's advice is illustrated by tying a rope to a cow's tail (protection against knocking), catching pigeons using bait (alcohol-soaked grain), and rubbing salt on a hen's anus (control of laying eggs). The constantly drunken grandfather dies under wheels of a tram at the end, leaving the children to their evil fate. Apparently, the grandchildren find the grandfather's accident rather liberating.
