This film follows the life of a young man from one prison to the next, with brief interludes of freedom, from age eighteen on. Now thirty-six and a writer, he is seriously ill and continues to struggle with his criminal career. The journey taken by René, the "Czech Villon", unfolds against the backdrop of political changes in Central Europe. It begins in a prison filled with communist symbols and continues with the "Velvet Revolution" and the Czech Republic's accession to the European Union.
