The film was inspired by actual events that a Romany mother lived through after the death of her husband. She was confronted by existential problems and was forced to fight against officials over the care of her seven children that the officials wanted to place in institutional care. The ambitious lady lawyer and trustee Kochta offered her help.(In the Romany language El Paso is slang for a hold-up.)
