Three candidates reached the last round of the job contest for the job of a local copper: the shepherd, the parish clerk and the stone-mason. All three bribe the Council members with beer and geese. Finally, the stone-mason wins, after he demonstrates his ability to uphold the law. When he is commanded to give the chairman a good slap and two to the deputy, he does so readily.
