The film revolves around the story of Fabricius, a foreign businessman who wants to spend the night with a woman after a business meeting. In the middle of the night, at the Old Town Square, he meets the beautiful Zuzana, who is followed in the distance by her driver Václav driving a luxurious car. Fabricius is captivated by the young woman and carelessly confesses love to her. Their night walk through Prague takes them to the Jewish cemetery. Zuzana insists on telling Fabricius the story of the Golem. The couple goes to the man's hotel room to escape the intrusive Václav. Here, the man is forced to hear another story, this time about shoes made of bread that a coddled noblewoman ordered for herself at a time of famine. In the small hours of the next morning, Zuzana tells Fabricius her last story. Long ago, a beautiful woman innkeeper was cursed for poisoning and robbing her suitors. Every one hundred and ninety years, she must return and search for a man willing to kiss her out of pure love, thus freeing her and her servant. Fabricius fails to understand her warning. When he kisses Zuzana passionately but without love, he is compelled to take Václav's place.
