Synopsis

The pay of Karel Jindříšek, an incorruptible operating technician of the District Housing Enterprise (the famous OPBH during the Communist era) is lousy. He cannot afford to have a child with his eternally frustrated wife; he cannot afford a new car instead of his old Škoda. In the morning, Karel crosses the Mánes Bridge in Prague with his car but suddenly finds himself on the main bridge in the Slovak capital of Bratislava. He spends his last money on fuel and returns to Prague via the highway. No one believes his story. Karel gets drunk and decides to start stealing. He begins with office appliances. On his way to his friend, a psychiatrist called Milan, he again somehow ends up in Bratislava. Milan believes him only after eyewitnessing Karel's odd "wanderings". Karel decides to convert his unexpected skill into money: he buys a used minibus and plans to organize speedy transportation between Prague and Bratislava. But his first ride takes him only to Brno instead of Bratislava and the second one to the Prague suburbs of Průhonice. He eventually ends up only as close as at the Prague Mánes Bridge where his car even begins to reverse and causes an accident. Karel escapes over the bridge, again appearing in Bratislava and then running back to Prague on the highway. He then wakes up from the dream at home, desperate that he is the same as the others again.
