The house-painter Havelka prefers training his hound to work. His friend Pavelka envies him the dog. In a pub they quarrel about which one of them is better huntsman. When Havelka does not want to sell the dog to Pavelka, the farmer Pavelka makes Havelka drunk and cheats the dog out of him for nothing. The painter despairs. His wife is crossed with him, he does not prosper at work, and he forfeited the loved animal. Anyway, in the meantime Pavelka unsuccesfully tries to train the dog and he even uses the whip. A fight occurs between both men. The dog defends Havelka and bites the farmer. In a violent reaction the farmer kills the dog with a pickaxe. Havelka carries away the dead animal. He is accompanied by Pavelka distracted with grief.
