Master Krtička teaches boys the essentials of lathe-turning. During the break the apprentices listen to heroic love stories of a warehouse keeper Rambousek. He gives most lessons to a shy Čeněk. Krtička reproaches Rambousek his racy pedagogic methods. Rambousek likes to be a worldling, at least in his dreams, and doesn't want to stop. Apprentices flirt with to-be-dress-makers from a nearby factory. That's why Krtička throws a letter through an open window to the workshop and "discloses" Čeněk's and Markéta's love story. The young people start a relationship - at first a very delicate one. Rambousek does not know Čeněk's first girlfriend is his daughter and makes Čeněk accept keys to his flat. Later on he gets shocked as when accompanied by Krtička he finds Čeněk and Markéta at his home. The young pair thanks Master Krtička for making them acquainted.
