Synopsis

The apprentice Vašek works with master Karpíšek on the tower of St Nicholas' church. Karpíšek is of the old school and his methods of instruction do not appeal to Vašek. He decides to leave his teacher, just like the nineteen other boys before him. During an argument about cigarettes Karpíšek falls from the scaffolding; Vašek rushes to his master's aid without a second's thought. This moment of mortal danger brings the two closer together and Vašek forgets about his notice to quit. He remains as Karpíšek's twentieth apprentice.
