A lance-corporal is ordered to accompany a soldier named Soukup, who suffers from of allegiance inflammation, to the city hospital. The recruit Soukup has not made his oath to the army yet, and is thus not allowed to leave the military grounds without permission. The lance-corporal is disgusted by the task and apparently despises the young man who wants to make friends with him. He is only looking forward to having fun in the city as soon as he drops Soukup at the hospital. His expectations, however, go unfulfilled - he must take the sick man back. In the afternoon, they both wander around the city. Soukup's legs in their heavy hob-nailed boots hurt and he is thus grateful for any expression of the lance-corporal's sympathy. During their return to the grounds, the lance-corporal wears Soukup's heavy boots while Soukup indulges himself in the lance-corporal's light low shoes.
